Pope Leo XIV
1955 CE · Modern · Chicago, IL
Born Robert Francis Prevost in Chicago, Leo XIV was elected in 2025 as the first pope born in the United States. A member of the Augustinian order, he spent many years as a missionary and bishop in Peru, of which he also became a citizen, before serving in Rome as head of the dicastery overseeing the appointment of bishops worldwide. His choice of the name Leo evoked Leo XIII and that pope's legacy of Catholic social teaching, signaling concern for workers and human dignity in an age of new technological and economic change. As a recent pope, his full legacy remains to be written.
