Cetshwayo
1826 CE–1884 CE · Zululand (Ulundi)
Cetshwayo became king of the Zulu in 1873, the last to rule an independent Zulu kingdom. When Britain invaded in 1879, his army defeated a British column at the Battle of Isandlwana, one of the most striking reverses suffered by a colonial force in the region. British forces regrouped and ultimately overcame the Zulu, capturing Cetshwayo and dividing the kingdom. He was later briefly restored to part of his realm before his death in 1884.
