Washakie
1804 CE–1900 CE · Wind River (Shoshone)
Washakie was a headman and statesman of the Eastern Shoshone in the Rocky Mountain region during the nineteenth century. Known both as a warrior and a skilled negotiator, he pursued a policy of cooperation with the United States to protect his people's homeland. In the Fort Bridger treaties of 1863 and 1868 he secured the Wind River country of present-day Wyoming as the Eastern Shoshone reservation. He led his people there for decades until his death in 1900.
