Otto von Bismarck

Otto von Bismarck was a Prussian statesman who served as Minister-President of Prussia from 1862 and as the first Chancellor of the German Empire from 1871 to 1890. Through a series of wars and diplomatic maneuvers he brought about the unification of Germany under Prussian leadership, achieved in 1871. As chancellor he dominated European diplomacy for two decades and introduced pioneering social-insurance legislation while suppressing socialist and Catholic political movements. He was dismissed by Emperor Wilhelm II in 1890 and died in 1898.
