Richard Francis Burton

Richard Francis Burton was a British explorer, army officer, diplomat, and translator active in the nineteenth century. Commissioned in the East India Company army, he mastered numerous languages and travelled widely across South Asia, Arabia, and Africa. In 1853 he journeyed to Mecca and Medina in disguise, and later reached the city of Harar. With John Hanning Speke he led an expedition into East Africa, reaching Lake Tanganyika in 1858. He served as British consul at Fernando Pó, Santos, Damascus, and Trieste. Burton produced a large body of travel writing and translations, including an unexpurgated English rendering of the Arabian Nights and the Kama Sutra.
