Abdulaziz
1830 CE–1876 CE · Constantinople
Abdulaziz was an Ottoman ruler (reigned 1861–1876) who continued Tanzimat-era modernization, expanding the navy and railways and becoming the first Ottoman sultan to tour Western Europe. Mounting fiscal crisis, foreign debt, and unrest in the Balkans weakened his position. He was deposed in 1876 and died days later under disputed circumstances, officially recorded as a suicide.
