Pedro II of Brazil

Pedro II (1825–1891) was the second and last emperor of Brazil, succeeding to the throne as a child in 1831 and ruling in his own right from 1840. His long reign was marked by relative political stability, economic development, and the gradual abolition of slavery, completed in 1888. In 1889 a republican military coup deposed the monarchy, and Pedro II went into exile in Europe. He died in Paris in 1891.
