William Gladstone

William Ewart Gladstone was a British statesman who served four separate terms as Prime Minister of the United Kingdom between 1868 and 1894, more than any other person to hold the office. The leading figure of the Liberal Party for much of the Victorian era, he was a longtime political rival of Benjamin Disraeli. His career was marked by fiscal reform, the extension of the franchise, and repeated efforts to grant Home Rule to Ireland, which ultimately failed. He first entered Parliament in 1832 and retired from politics in 1894 at the age of 84.
