Georges Bizet

1838 CE1875 CE · Composer · Paris

Georges Bizet was a French composer of the Romantic era, born in Paris in 1838 into a family of musicians. Admitted to the Paris Conservatoire in 1848, shortly before his tenth birthday (the institution's minimum-age rule was waived for him), he studied under Fromental Halévy and won the Prix de Rome in 1857, spending the following years in Italy. Returning to Paris, he worked as a composer, arranger, and pianist. His stage works include Les Pêcheurs de perles and La Jolie Fille de Perth, and the incidental music for L'Arlésienne. His opera Carmen premiered in March 1875. Bizet died at Bougival, near Paris, in June 1875, aged thirty-six.
