Ulysses S. Grant

Ulysses S. Grant was the 18th President, serving from 1869 to 1877 as a Republican. As commanding general of the Union armies, he had led them to victory in the Civil War and accepted the Confederate surrender at Appomattox in 1865. His two-term presidency oversaw Reconstruction in the South and the enforcement of the Fifteenth Amendment protecting voting rights.
