Karl I

1887 CE1922 CE · Vienna, Austria

Karl I was the last Emperor of Austria and, as Károly IV, King of Hungary, reigning from 1916 until 1918. He succeeded Franz Joseph I during the First World War and made unsuccessful efforts to negotiate a separate peace. With the defeat of the Central Powers and the collapse of Austria-Hungary in late 1918, he renounced participation in state affairs, and the monarchy was abolished. He went into exile, made two failed attempts to reclaim the Hungarian throne in 1921, and died in 1922.
