Robert Louis Stevenson

Robert Louis Stevenson was a Scottish novelist, essayist, poet and travel writer. Born in Edinburgh into a family of lighthouse engineers, he trained in law but turned to letters. Chronic lung illness drove a life of constant travel across Europe, the United States and the Pacific. He achieved wide readership with the adventure novel Treasure Island (1883), the psychological tale Strange Case of Dr Jekyll and Mr Hyde (1886), and the historical romance Kidnapped (1886), alongside verse in A Child's Garden of Verses. In 1890 he settled at Vailima on Upolu, Samoa, where islanders called him Tusitala, "teller of tales." He died there in 1894.
