Ghezo
?–1858 CE · Abomey
Ghezo (died 1858) was king of Dahomey, in present-day Benin, reigning from 1818 to 1858. He came to power through a coup against his brother and ended Dahomey's long-standing tributary status to the neighboring Oyo Empire by defeating Oyo forces in 1823. He reorganized and expanded the army, including the female regiment that Europeans called the Dahomey Amazons, and Dahomey's economy under his rule remained tied to the Atlantic slave trade and later palm oil commerce. He was killed in 1858 and succeeded by his son Glele.
