Martin Van Buren was the 8th President, serving from 1837 to 1841 as a Democrat. A key organizer of the Democratic Party, he had served as governor of New York, Secretary of State, and Vice President under Andrew Jackson. His single term was dominated by the economic downturn known as the Panic of 1837, and he later ran again as a Free Soil candidate.
