Pope Bl. Pius IX
1792 CE–1878 CE · Modern · Senigallia
Giovanni Maria Mastai-Ferretti reigned nearly thirty-two years, the longest of any verified pope. Hailed at first as a liberal reformer, he turned conservative after the 1848 revolutions drove him briefly into exile. He proclaimed the dogma of the Immaculate Conception (1854), issued the Syllabus of Errors (1864) condemning many modern currents, and convened the First Vatican Council (1870), which defined papal infallibility. During his reign Italian unification stripped away the Papal States; with Rome's capture in 1870 he declared himself a 'prisoner in the Vatican.' Revered by many Catholics and beatified in 2000, he remains contested—especially over the Edgardo Mortara affair and his anti-liberal stance.
