Henry John Temple, 3rd Viscount Palmerston, was a British statesman who served as Prime Minister from 1855 to 1858 and from 1859 until his death in 1865. He earlier held the office of Foreign Secretary for extended periods and became the dominant figure in mid-Victorian British foreign policy. He directed Britain's course during the Crimean War and asserted British interests assertively abroad. He remains the most recent British prime minister to die in office.
