Itzamnaaj Bahlam III (Shield Jaguar II 'the Great')

?–742 CE · Yaxchilan

Itzamnaaj Bahlam III, known as Shield Jaguar II 'the Great,' ruled Yaxchilan (Pa'chan) for some sixty years from 681 to 742. A vigorous war-king, he expanded the city's power along the Usumacinta River and adorned it with celebrated carved monuments. Best known is the series of lintels in Structure 23, including Lintel 24, which shows his principal queen, Lady K'ab'al Xook, drawing a thorned cord through her tongue in a bloodletting rite—among the masterpieces of Maya art.
