Licinius

Licinius

c. 265 CEc. 325 CE · Naissus (Niš)

Eastern Roman emperor (r. 308-324) who in 313 CE jointly issued the Edict of Milan with Constantine, extending official toleration to Christians and ordering the restitution of confiscated Christian property across the empire. In the later years of his reign he turned against the Christians of the East — our main source, the pro-Constantine Eusebius, reports that he purged them from his court and army and restricted their worship — and Constantine invoked this as grounds for war. Defeated by Constantine at Adrianople and Chrysopolis in 324, Licinius was interned at Thessalonica and executed there in 325.
