Severus II
?–c. 307 CE · Naissus (Niš)
Flavius Valerius Severus (Severus II) was a Tetrarchic emperor of humble Illyrian origin who was raised to Caesar in 305 and to Western Augustus in 306 under the system established by Diocletian. Sent by Galerius to suppress the usurpation of Maxentius in Italy, he was defeated, induced to surrender, and held captive; he died at Tres Tabernae (near modern Cisterna di Latina) in September 307, either executed or forced to take his own life. His brief reign was consumed entirely by the Tetrarchic civil wars and left no notable interactions with the Jewish, Christian, or Greek philosophical worlds.
