Bajlaj Chan K'awiil (Ruler 1)

625 CE692 CE · Dos Pilas

Bajlaj Chan K'awiil, 'Ruler 1,' founded the royal line of Dos Pilas in the Petexbatun region. A son of Tikal's dynasty installed there as a boy, he broke with Tikal and allied himself with its great rival Calakmul, turning Dos Pilas into a rival claimant to the Tikal throne. His long war against his own brother, Tikal's king Nuun Ujol Chaak, culminated in the sack of Tikal in 679 and helped Calakmul dominate the central lowlands.
