Nicholas II
1868 CE–1918 CE · St. Petersburg
Nicholas II (1868–1918) was the last emperor of Russia, reigning from 1894. His rule was strained by defeat in the Russo-Japanese War, the Revolution of 1905, and the enormous casualties and hardships of the First World War. Amid the crisis he abdicated during the February Revolution of 1917, ending more than three centuries of Romanov rule. He and his immediate family were held in captivity and executed by Bolshevik authorities in Yekaterinburg in 1918.
