Joseph Conrad, born Józef Teodor Konrad Korzeniowski to Polish parents in Berdychiv in the Russian Empire, became one of the foremost novelists writing in English, a language he learned only in his twenties. Orphaned young after his family's exile for anti-Russian activity, he was placed under the guardianship of his maternal uncle Tadeusz Bobrowski and schooled in Kraków. From 1874 he spent nearly two decades at sea in the French and British merchant marines, rising to captain and naturalizing as a British subject in 1886. Settling in England, he turned to writing, producing Almayer's Folly, Heart of Darkness, Lord Jim, Nostromo, and The Secret Agent — most of them composed at his Kentish homes such as Pent Farm. He died in Bishopsbourne, Kent, in 1924.
