Vladimir Lenin (1870–1924) was the Bolshevik revolutionary leader who directed the October Revolution of 1917 and founded the Soviet state, heading the government from that year until his death. Under his leadership Russia became a one-party dictatorship governed by the Communist Party, and the Bolsheviks won a bitter civil war. His government established the Cheka secret police and, from 1918, carried out the Red Terror, a campaign of mass political repression and executions against real and perceived opponents. He also introduced the New Economic Policy in 1921, and after his death in 1924 a struggle for the succession followed.
