Wovoka (Jack Wilson)

Wovoka, also called Jack Wilson, was a Northern Paiute religious leader near Walker River in Nevada. In 1889 he described a vision in which the dead would be restored and peace would return if people lived rightly and performed a ceremonial round dance. His teaching became the basis of the Ghost Dance movement, which spread rapidly among Native nations across the Plains. He continued to be regarded as a prophet and healer among his people until his death in 1932.
