Gojong of Korea

Gojong of Korea (1852-1919) was the last effective ruler of Korea, reigning as the twenty-sixth king of Joseon from 1863 and then as the first emperor of the Korean Empire from 1897. Ascending as a child under the regency of his father, the Heungseon Daewongun, he later navigated intense rivalry among China, Japan, and Russia for influence over Korea and proclaimed the empire in an effort to assert independence. Amid expanding Japanese control, he was forced to abdicate in 1907, three years before Japan formally annexed Korea in 1910.
