Giacomo Puccini
1858 CE–1924 CE · Composer · Lucca
Giacomo Puccini was an Italian operatic composer, descended from a long line of Lucca church musicians. He trained at the Milan Conservatory and rose to prominence with Manon Lescaut (1893), followed by the works on which his reputation rests: La bohème, Tosca, and Madama Butterfly. Associated with the verismo current in Italian opera, he was noted for lyrical melody, orchestral color, and stagecraft aimed at emotional immediacy. For three decades he composed at Torre del Lago on Lake Massaciuccoli, later moving to nearby Viareggio. He died in Brussels in 1924 following treatment for throat cancer, leaving his final opera, Turandot, unfinished.
