Theodore Roosevelt was the 26th President, serving from 1901 to 1909 as a Republican. He took office after the assassination of William McKinley, having been Vice President. A Progressive reformer and conservationist, he pursued antitrust 'trust-busting,' expanded national parks and forests, and oversaw the start of the Panama Canal.
