Arthur Conan Doyle
1859 CE–1930 CE · Writer · Edinburgh
Arthur Conan Doyle was a Scottish writer and physician, best known as the creator of the detective Sherlock Holmes and his companion Dr. Watson. Trained in medicine at the University of Edinburgh, he practiced in Southsea before turning to writing full time. Beyond the Holmes stories he produced historical novels, the Professor Challenger tales, poetry, and non-fiction. He served as a physician and wrote in defense of British conduct during the Boer War, for which he was knighted in 1902. In later life he devoted much energy to promoting Spiritualism, lecturing and writing widely on the subject until his death.
