Osman I

Osman I (c. 1254–1324) was the founder and namesake of the Ottoman dynasty, a Turkish frontier leader in northwestern Anatolia. From a small principality on the Byzantine border he expanded his territory around the turn of the fourteenth century, giving the state its early momentum. The dynasty and empire he began, known as the House of Osman, would endure for roughly six centuries. He remains the figure to whom later Ottoman sultans traced their legitimacy.
