Ghiyas ud-Din Balban
?–1287 CE · Delhi
Ghiyas ud-Din Balban was a former slave who rose to become a powerful regent and then, from 1266, sultan of Delhi. He established a highly centralized and authoritarian administration, elevating the prestige of the throne and curbing the influence of the Turkic nobility known as the 'Forty.' He devoted much effort to defending the northwestern frontier against repeated Mongol incursions. He died in 1287.
