Alauddin Khalji
?–1316 CE · Delhi
Alauddin Khalji was the most powerful ruler of the Khalji dynasty of Delhi, coming to power in 1296 after killing his uncle Jalal ud-Din. He repelled a series of Mongol invasions and greatly expanded the sultanate, campaigning in Rajasthan and, through his general Malik Kafur, into the Deccan and far southern India. Several of his campaigns were accompanied by mass violence; his siege of Chittor in 1303, for example, ended with the reported jauhar (mass self-immolation) of Rajput women. He is also known for far-reaching administrative and market price-control reforms designed to sustain a large standing army, and he died in 1316.
