Ivan I Kalita

Ivan I Kalita (c. 1288–1340) was Prince of Moscow from 1325 and Grand Prince of Vladimir from 1331, ruling under the overlordship of the Golden Horde. Nicknamed "Kalita" (moneybag), he greatly increased Moscow's wealth and influence, in part by serving as the Horde's chief tax-collector among the Russian lands and using that position to expand his own domains. He also drew the seat of the Orthodox metropolitan to Moscow, giving the city religious as well as political prestige. His policies laid important foundations for Moscow's later rise to dominance over the other Russian principalities.
