Robert the Bruce

Robert the Bruce was crowned king of Scots in 1306 during the Wars of Scottish Independence against England. After early defeats he waged a determined guerrilla campaign, and in 1314 his forces decisively defeated a much larger English army at the Battle of Bannockburn. His victory secured Scottish independence, formally recognized by England in 1328, the year before his death in 1329. He is remembered as one of Scotland's national heroes.
