Founder of Stretin Hasidism
1780 CE–1854 CE · Hasidic · Stratyn (Stretin)
R. Yehuda Tzvi Brandwein of Stretin (Stratyn, 1780-1854) was the founder of the Stretin Hasidic dynasty in Eastern Galicia. A leading disciple of R. Uri of Strelisk (the 'Saraf' / Seraph), he succeeded his teacher and established his own court in Stratyn.
His Degel Machaneh Yehuda is a homiletic-ethical work. The Stretin dynasty produced several notable Galician tzaddikim through the 19th century and was reconstituted in Israel after the Holocaust.
