Édouard Manet

1832 CE1883 CE · Painter · Paris

Édouard Manet (1832–1883) was a French painter born in Paris to a bourgeois family. After failing a naval entrance examination and a training voyage to Rio de Janeiro, he studied under the academic painter Thomas Couture from about 1850 to 1857. His canvases Le Déjeuner sur l'herbe (1863) and Olympia (1863) provoked sharp controversy at the Paris Salon and the Salon des Refusés for their contemporary subjects and flattened handling of paint. A trip to Spain in 1865 deepened his engagement with Velázquez and Goya. Associated with the emerging Impressionists, though he rarely exhibited with them, he worked in Paris until his death.
