Emily Dickinson

Emily Dickinson was an American poet born in Amherst, Massachusetts, in 1830. Educated at Amherst Academy and briefly at Mount Holyoke Female Seminary, she spent nearly her entire life in her family home, becoming increasingly reclusive in later years. She wrote close to 1,800 poems, characterized by compressed language, slant rhyme, unconventional punctuation, and dashes. Only about ten appeared in print during her lifetime, mostly anonymously. After her death in 1886, her sister Lavinia found the bound manuscript collections, and the first volume was published in 1890. She is now regarded as a major figure in American letters.
