Friedrich Engels

Friedrich Engels (1820-1895) was a German political theorist, journalist, and businessman. Born in Barmen into a Pietist manufacturing family, he served a commercial apprenticeship at an export firm in Bremen and later worked in the family textile firm Ermen & Engels in Manchester, where his observations informed The Condition of the Working Class in England (1845). He formed a lifelong partnership with Karl Marx, co-authoring The Communist Manifesto (1848) and helping develop the body of thought later called Marxism. Managing the firm Ermen & Engels, he supported Marx financially for decades. After Marx's death he edited and completed the second and third volumes of Das Kapital from Marx's manuscripts. He died in London in 1895.
