Pope St. Paul VI
1897 CE–1978 CE · Modern · Brescia
Born Giovanni Battista Montini near Brescia, Paul VI inherited and concluded the Second Vatican Council, then undertook the immense task of implementing its reforms, including the revised liturgy. He was the first modern pope to travel widely, visiting the Holy Land, the United Nations, India, and beyond, and he advanced ecumenical and interreligious dialogue, notably reconciling with the Orthodox. His 1968 encyclical Humanae Vitae, reaffirming the Church's prohibition of artificial contraception, proved deeply divisive and shaped debates that continue today. Thoughtful and sometimes anguished, he steered the Church through a period of rapid change and internal tension. He was canonized in 2018.
