Pope Marinus I
?–884 CE · Gallese
Born at Gallese in Tuscia, Marinus I rose through the Roman clergy and served on important legations, including to the Fourth Council of Constantinople, before his election. He was the first bishop already consecrated for another see (Caere) to be elevated to the papacy, an irregularity that drew later comment. Reacting against the policies of John VIII, he reinstated the disgraced Formosus and showed favor to King Alfred of Wessex, reportedly exempting the English quarter in Rome from taxation. His short reign reflects the volatile factional politics of the late-ninth-century Roman church.
