Pope Stephen V

Born into a noble Roman family and educated by a relative, Bishop Zachary, Stephen V was elected during famine and Saracen pressure. He looked to the Frankish ruler Guido of Spoleto, whom he crowned emperor, as a protector amid the collapse of central authority. In the Slavic lands he sided against the disciples of Methodius, helping end the Slavonic liturgy in Moravia and shifting it toward the Latin rite. He also corresponded with Bulgaria and the East. His reign exemplifies the papacy's growing dependence on local Italian power as the Carolingian empire faded.
