Yaropolk I of Kiev

Yaropolk I of Kiev (c. 958–980) was the eldest son of Svyatoslav I and ruled Kiev from 972. He became sole ruler after a conflict in which his brother Oleg was killed, but was in turn overthrown and killed by his half-brother Vladimir, who seized Kiev with Varangian support. His defeat and death, dated by tradition to 980 (some scholars prefer 978), ended a fratricidal succession struggle among the sons of Svyatoslav. His reign is known only from the semi-legendary account of the Primary Chronicle.
