Almanzor (al-Mansur ibn Abi Aamir)

Almanzor (c. 938-1002), in Arabic al-Mansur ibn Abi Aamir, was the chamberlain (hajib) who served as de facto ruler of the Caliphate of Cordoba from 978 to 1002 in the name of the young caliph Hisham II. He concentrated military and administrative power in his own hands and launched numerous campaigns against the Christian kingdoms of northern Iberia. His rule marked the military peak of Umayyad al-Andalus, though his consolidation of power weakened the caliphal institution. He died in 1002 and was succeeded in office by his sons.
