Svyatoslav I of Kiev

Svyatoslav I of Kiev (c. 943–972) was a warrior prince who ruled the Rus in name from 945 under his mother Olga's regency and in his own right from around the 960s. His campaigns shattered the power of the Khazar Khaganate and warred against the Volga Bulgars and the Byzantine Empire, greatly expanding Rus military reach. He was killed in 972 by the Pechenegs, nomadic raiders who ambushed him at the cataracts of the Dnieper River as he returned from a Balkan campaign. His death was followed by a war of succession among his sons.
