Sureśvara
750 CE
c. 8th c. CE (direct disciple of Śaṅkara), disputed
Sureśvara was one of Śaṅkara's four principal disciples and the first abbot of the Śṛṅgeri maṭha in some traditions. He authored the great Vārttikas (versified sub-commentaries) on Śaṅkara's bhāṣyas to the Bṛhadāraṇyaka and Taittirīya Upaniṣads, as well as the independent Naiṣkarmya-siddhi, developing the 'Vārttika' school of Advaita that emphasized knowledge alone as the means to liberation. Tradition identifies him with the former Mīmāṃsaka Maṇḍana Miśra, but because the doctrines of the Brahmasiddhi and Sureśvara's works diverge, many modern scholars treat them as distinct figures. His dates are placed in the 8th century.
