Fridtjof Nansen

Fridtjof Nansen was a Norwegian polar explorer, zoologist, oceanographer, diplomat and humanitarian. Trained in zoology at the University of Christiania, he led the first crossing of the Greenland ice sheet in 1888 and devised the Fram expedition of 1893–1896, in which his purpose-built ship was frozen into the Arctic ice to drift toward the pole; a sledge dash with Hjalmar Johansen reached a record 86°14′ north. He later helped negotiate Norway's independence in 1905 and served as its minister to Britain. As a League of Nations High Commissioner he organised prisoner repatriation and refugee relief, and the "Nansen passport" bears his name. He received the 1922 Nobel Peace Prize.
