Marcel Proust was a French novelist, essayist, and critic, best known for the seven-volume work À la recherche du temps perdu (In Search of Lost Time), published between 1913 and 1927, the final volumes appearing after his death. Born in the Auteuil district of Paris in 1871, he grew up in a cultivated bourgeois household and moved in Parisian literary and aristocratic salons. Chronic asthma shaped his increasingly reclusive later years, during which he worked in a cork-lined room, revising his novel almost until his death in 1922. His writing is noted for long sentences, involuntary memory, and analysis of time, society, art, and desire.
