Otto I the Great
912 CE–973 CE · Magdeburg
Otto I, king of the East Franks (Germany) from 936, restored strong central authority over the German duchies. In 955 he decisively defeated the Magyars at the Battle of Lechfeld, ending their raids into western Europe. In 962 Pope John XII crowned him Emperor, re-founding what became the Holy Roman Empire and linking the German crown to imperial and papal affairs for centuries. He extended his influence into Italy and eastern Europe before his death in 973.
