Afonso I of Kongo

Afonso I (Mvemba a Nzinga) ruled the Kingdom of Kongo, in west-central Africa, from about 1509 until 1543. A convert to Catholicism, he built a Christian monarchy, corresponded with the kings of Portugal and the papacy, and promoted literacy and church-building in his realm. His surviving letters are among the earliest documents authored by a sub-Saharan African ruler and include protests against the disruptive growth of the Atlantic slave trade in his kingdom. His reign shaped Kongo's engagement with Europe for generations.
