Ferdinand Magellan

Ferdinand Magellan was a Portuguese maritime explorer who organized and led the 1519 Spanish expedition seeking a westward route to the Spice Islands. Born about 1480 in northern Portugal, he served the Portuguese crown in India and Southeast Asia and later in the Moroccan campaign before entering the service of Castile. Departing Sanlúcar de Barrameda in 1519 with five ships, his fleet crossed the Atlantic, traversed the strait at South America's southern tip that later bore his name, and reached the Pacific and the Philippines. Magellan was killed at Mactan in April 1521. One surviving ship completed the first circumnavigation of the globe in 1522 under Juan Sebastián Elcano.
