Raphael

1483 CE–1520 CE · Painter · Urbino

Raphael was an Italian painter and architect of the High Renaissance, born in Urbino, where his father served as court painter. He trained in central Italy, absorbing the manner of Perugino before establishing himself as an independent master. Working in Florence from about 1504, he studied the innovations of Leonardo and Michelangelo and became sought after for his Madonnas and portraits. Called to Rome in 1508 by Pope Julius II, he frescoed the papal apartments, including the Stanza della Segnatura with its "School of Athens." He directed a large workshop, later oversaw work at St. Peter's Basilica, and died in Rome at thirty-seven.
